The application of virtual reality technology has given a whole new meaning to film art, opening up new spatio-temporal characteristics of film. The stripping away of montage and the enhancement of spatio-temporal dimensions have enabled it to break through the limitations of the "fourth wall" in cinema, bringing an immersive viewing experience to the audience.Starting from the spatio-temporal characteristics of virtual reality film themselves, this paper chooses to compare and contrast the two art forms from a theatrical perspective, exploring the narrative devices applicable to virtual reality film,in an attempt to contribute to solving the narrative problems currently encountered in virtual reality film.Firstly, the two narrative structures applicable to virtual reality film are analysed and summarised in relation to current virtual reality video works:"time jumps, space stretches" and "space flows, time continues".Secondly, based on the theoretical studies of theatre art by predecessors such as Liang Yanli,Dong Jian and Ma Junshan, the similarities between virtual reality film and theatre in spatiotemporal narratives are explored, and the four narrative strategies available for virtual reality film in spatio-temporal narratives are summarised from the perspective of theatre:"using ’frames’ to unify seemingly loose narrative fragments","using ’time periods’ to complete the construction of narrative time","setting up ’props’ to connect The use of ’static scenes’ to regulate the rhythm of the film".Finally, the narrative time structure and spatio-temporal narrative strategies proposed in the paper were put into practice in the creation of the virtual reality film The Gift, and their application in the filming process was analysed in depth to summarise the narrative effect of the narrative time structure on virtual reality film under real viewing conditions.
