Bedtime Procrastination is the subjective postponement of sleep by an individual without the constraints of an external cause. As a negative behaviour that poses a risk to human health,it has become a hot topic of research in recent years. Most researchers have attributed the causes of Bedtime Procrastination to the depletion of psychological energy, which results in a fatigue of self-regulation at the behavioural level, manifesting itself in a state of immersion in the present.Fewer scholars have focused on the influence of an individual’s internal state on Bedtime Procrastination, whereas Basic Psychological Needs are better predictors of human behaviour based on motivation theory, and most of this research area focuses on how to increase an individual’s psychological energy to avoid the negative effects of self depletion.Individuals with low levels of Basic Psychological Needs are in a state of poor self-control over their depletion, have less concern for the future and are more immersed in the present, thus exhibiting a variety of negative behaviours.Satisfying basic psychological needs has been shown to be effective in overcoming ego depletion, but whether it is effective in overcoming ego depletion and avoiding Bedtime Procrastination has yet to be investigated.Based on this paradox, this study investigates how Basic Psychological Needs,Self-regulatory fatigue and Consideration of Future Consequences influence Bedtime Procrastination. In this study, the Basic Psychological Needs Scale, the Self-Regulation Fatigue Scale, the Bedtime Procrastination Scale and Consideration of Future Consequences Scale were selected as instruments to examine the relationship between Basic Psychological Needs as an internal drive for action and individual Bedtime Procrastination behaviour, and to explore the role of Self-regulation fatigue and Consideration of Future Consequences in the study.A total of 1142 questionnaires were distributed and 1042 valid questionnaires were returned. In addition, based on the results of questionnaire survey, further intervention experiments were conducted to investigate the relationship between Basic Psychological Needs and Bedtime Procrastination. With college students as the main body,21 students in the intervention group and 19 in the control group were selected through online recruitment and questionnaire screening. The experimental design of pre and post test was adopted,11 times of intervention were performed in the intervention group, and the control group was guided to complete the neutral task. The results showed that prospective intervention had positive effects on bedtime procrastination behavior of college students. The study found that Basic Psychological Needs influenced Bedtime Procrastination through Self-regulatory fatigue and Consideration of Future Consequences,i.e.the higher the level of basic psychological needs, the lower the level of self-regulatory fatigue and the higher the level of future outcome expectations, which in turn led to a reduction in sleep procrastination. The results of the experiment on future outcome expectations showed that the intervention had a significant effect on individuals’ sleep procrastination behaviour, providing new ideas on how to regulate people’s sleep procrastination behaviour in real life. The specific findings are as follows.(1)There are correlations among four variables: Basic Psychological Needs,Self-regulation fatigue,Consideration of Future Consequences and Bedtime Procrastination;Basic Psychological Needs and Consideration of Future Consequences negatively and significantly predict Self-regulation fatigue and sleep procrastination;basic psychological needs and future outcome expectations are significantly and positively correlated;self-regulation fatigue can significantly and positively predict Bedtime Procrastination among university students.(2)Self-regulation fatigue mediates the relationship between basic psychological needs and sleep procrastination.(3)Consideration of Future Consequences mediated the relationship between Basic Psychological Needs and Bedtime Procrastination.(4)Self-regulatory fatigue and Consideration of Future Consequences mediate the chain between Basic Psychological Needs and Bedtime Procrastination.(5)Future outcome expectancy interventions have a significant ameliorative effect on individuals’ sleep procrastination behaviour.
