This report is based on an English-Chinese translation project of chapter one of Oil Powers: A History of the U.S.-Saudi Alliance,by American historian Victor Mc Farland. The report introduces the background and significance of this project;describes all the preparations made before translation;explains the translation process and quality control procedures after translation was completed;expounds on the difficulties encountered in the translation process and offers solutions provided by functional equivalence theory. At the lexical level, professional dictionaries, amplification strategies and context are relied on as the basis of translation of words. At the syntactic level, different translation techniques are employed to handle complex sentences. At the discourse level, several cohesive devices are introduced for better logic and cohesion. At the stylistic level,four-character structures and domestication strategy are used to reproduce the language style of the source text. This report offers a new framework for future research on translation of history texts, extends the application of functional equivalence theory, and provides new materials for the study of the U.S.-Saudi alliance and the world petroleum system.
