A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Water,Stone,Heart(Excerpts)

This translation practice report is based on the novel Water,Stone,Heart,written by the famous British writer Will North.The novel tells the story of newly divorced Andrew Stratton’s experience when he participated in the research of stone wall construction in Boscastle village.The novel uses many dialogues and vividly depicts the characters.In view of the differences between Chinese and English languages,the translator,as the medium of cultural transmission,always adheres to the principle of stating objective facts and tries to restore the source text to the greatest extent.Before translation,the translator specially studied various translation theories and found that “comprehension,expression and adaptation” framework proposed by Li changshuan and Shi Xiaojing was the most appropriate translation of the source text.At the “comprehension”level,the translator solved the problem of inaccurate grasp of the original language style and the logical relationship of context through the conversion;at the “expression” level,the problem of unclear logical structure of the original text was solved by ensuring cohesion and adjusting words order;at the “adaptation” level,by adopting the translation methods of amplification,omission and using idioms,the problem of perplexing the target readers due to the cultural differences between Chinese and English was solved.Through this translation practice,the translator finds that only by learning more professional knowledge and accumulating more experience can they improve their translation level.In order to become more professional and proficient in translation,the translator will summarize the harvest of this translation practice in order to provide reference for future work and study.
