A Report On E-C Translation Of Sci-tech News From The Perspective Of Translation Variation Theory:

With the rapid development of science,technology and economy,Chinese tech companies pay great attention to collecting international sci-tech information to understand international markets and develop their products.Sci-tech news is an important channel for them to obtain such information.In this context,sci-tech news translation becomes increasingly significant.Taking XM Company’s media monitoring texts as examples,this paper is a translation report on English-Chinese translation of sci-tech news.Readers of target texts are the senior executives and some employees of the XM Company,who are a small group with limited members.They have in-depth technology knowledge in the field,and pay close attention to critical information such as media reviews and market feedback.Source texts are from seventeen countries.Collected and organized by foreign agencies,the English source texts are provided to the XM Company.The source texts contain a lot of information that does not meet the target readers’ needs.The translator’s duty is translating the English source texts and demonstrating working achievements of the which?department through the translation(building a good image and earning a good reputation for the company).These issues need to be considered in the translation.The Translation Variation Theory(TVT)advocates that on the premise of respecting the source texts,the initiative of the translator should be given full play to reorganize and reproduce the texts by taking adaptation techniques to meet target readers’ needs under a particular condition.Based on the translation practice,this report selects some typical examples to elaborates on the application of seven variation methods in sci-tech news translation,such as translation plus explanation,narrated translation and translation plus rewriting,and analyzes the translation process from the perspectives of translation purposes,text characteristics and readers’ needs.Through the case study,the translator finds that TVT can resolve most difficulties in sci-tech news translation.At the level of words,translation plus explanation and translation plus rewriting can explain terms,jargon and key information,and correct improper words to make expressions clear and meet expectations and reading habits of readers.At the level of headlines,narrated translation and translation plus writing can summarize news contents,highlight focuses of texts,and target readers can get the main content of news by reading headlines.At the level of sentences,methods,such as selected translation and condensed translation,can filter redundant information,integrate scattered information and make texts logical,so that readers’ reading can be smooth.TVT provides feasible methods for the sci-tech news translation.A variety of factors,such as words selection,sense groups and sentences arrangement,are taken into consideration to meet readers’ needs,which can improve the efficiency and quality of information spreading.This report will hopefully shed some light on translation of the same type of texts.
