The Translation Methods Of Demonstratives In Military English

With the improvement of China’s comprehensive national strength,China’s national defense construction demands more for the development of the Navy.Learning from the tactics and strategies of the United States Marine Corps has a great role in promoting the development of China’s navy.In this translation practice,MCWP 3-01 Offensive and Defensive Tactics is selected.As a military text,it features highly professional and detailed information.Based on the translation tasks of Chapter 8 and Chapter 9,this translation practice report focuses on the translation methods of the demonstratives in military English.Since the "near" and "far"referential functions of English and Chinese demonstratives are affected by space,time and psychological factors of the referential content,comprehensive consideration should be given in the process of translation.Taking account of the above factors and the characteristics of the translated text,this paper summarizes two major translation strategies:equivalent translation and non-equivalent translation,the latter being the focus of this report.In the case of nonequivalent translation,the methods of ellipsis,crossover,reduction and generalization are adopted.The above strategies and methods effectively achieve the reasonable conversion between English and Chinese demonstratives.It is hoped that the exploration of demonstratives in this paper can provide useful reference for the translation practice and research of military texts,and this translation practice can be useful for the construction of Marine Corps in China.
