A Report On E-C Translation Of Research Articles In Mechanical Engineering Based On Skopos Theory

The translation of research articles plays a vital role in international academic exchanges.Research articles belong to the reporting genre,an objective report of the latest achievements in scientific research.Research articles are objective,rigorous,logical and normative.The accurate,fluent,and authentic translation of English research articles into Chinese is significant for the exchange of science and technology between China and foreign countries,the scientific and technological progress and development in China,as well as translation studies.Based on Vermeer’s Skopos Theory,this report takes the research articles in mechanical engineering in the Elsevier Science Direct database as translation materials to carry out translation practice.According to Skopos Theory,the translation purpose determines translation strategies.In the light of the stylistic features of research articles,different translation strategies,methods and techniques are adopted to achieve the translation purpose of research articles,not only transforming the source text clearly and accurately,but also facilitating the comprehension and acceptance of target readers.In the translation practice,it is found that English research articles are characterized by language expression characteristics,such as professional terms,long sentences and passive voices.The discrepancies in expression habits between English and Chinese should be fully considered in E-C translation to ensure the accuracy of the target text.For implicit sentences,the translation strategy of explicitation and the amplification translation technique are adopted to clearly reveal the implicit message,taking into account the context of the source text.For repetitive information,the translation strategy of implicitation and the omission technique are employed.For independent sentences with the same subject,the translation strategy of implicitation and the combination technique are adopted according to the coherence of the semantic content.For the part of speech in translation,combined with the Chinese expression habits,domestication and the conversion technique are adopted to ensure the fluency of sentences.For passive sentences,domestication,conversion of passive into active and maintenance of passive voice techniques are employed,respectively,considering the content of the source text and Chinese expression habits.For long sentences,combined with Chinese expression habits,domestication and the combination of splitting and restructuring techniques are adopted.For technical terms,foreignization and methods of consulting materials and experts are adopted to ensure correct translation.To achieve academic exchanges,the amplification,combination,and omission translation techniques should be appropriately employed during translation to make the target text natural,smooth,fluent,and easy for readers to receive.In addition,more attention should be paid to the faithfulness of the source text,taking into consideration the context and cultural differences between the source text and the target text,and translation techniques should be grasped and employed accurately to produce a target text that correctly conveys the original information,conforms to the cultural characteristics of the target language,and realizes the translation purpose.The translator hopes this translation practice report will provide valuable references for translators who adopt Skopos Theory to solve translation difficulties.
