A Report On English-Chinese Translation Of Academic Articles In Mechanical Engineering

This is a translation project report, which is commissioned by a professional major inmechanical engineering in Yanshan University. And this report is finished after thetranslation task and revising. The source articles are four English academic articles ofmechanical engineering, and they are typical English academic articles in science andtechnology, which are separately taken from2012International Conference on Computing,Electronics and Electrical Technologies [ICCEET],2011IEEE International Conferenceon Automation Science and Engineering, International Journal of Engineering Science andTechnology (IJEST) and Journal of Materials Processing Technology.With the translating of these four academic articles and the analysis of translationcases, this report probes into the features of science and technology English academicarticles. Based on the functional translation theories, after identifying that they belong toinformative texts and determining that a simple and direct translation shall be adopted, italso discusses some problems in the English-Chinese translation of academic articlesinstructed by functional translation theories: questions like how to employ sometranslation skills, how to ensure the quality and schedule of translation by preparationsbefore translating, by utilizations of supporting materials and tools, by communicatingwith the client, by consulting professional knowledge from those are learning relatedmajors, by examinations and revise of translations and a series of processes.For the translation of English for Sience and Technology(EST) and academic Englisharticles, the first thing to take into consideration is that its purpose is to conveyinformation. And based on this, the overall translation strategies and specific translationmethods are fixed. The objectivity of EST and academic English leads to the choice ofcommunicative translation strategy. It also results in the widely uses of addition, omission,conversion and explanatory translation skills to deal with the translation on lexical,syntactic and textual levels in this translation practice.After the translating of the academic article and the writing of this report, the authorhas a great improvement of the capacity to combine translation theories with practices. It is hoped that the translation can be a good reference for the client and those people whomajor in mechanical engineering, and that this report may give some enlightenment andhelp for other translators who translate such kinds of EST profiles.
