In China, children’s literature has a considerable market share in the publishing industry.Children grow up with it,which has a profound impact on their lives.Chinese History for Children has won the 10th Wenjin Book Award and is one of the most incredible series of historical children’s literature at home.During the 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, countless fascinating myths and legends were born, and countless historical stories embodying Chinese wisdom and Chinese spirit were contained.Traditional culture is the origin of Chinese culture, and the English translation of this book can better promote the process of Chinese culture“going global”,tell traditional Chinese stories to the world, and enhance our cultural soft power. After a systematic review of translation studies of children’s literature, this thesis finds that the focus of related studies has shifted from E-C translation to C-E translation in recent years. The target readers of children’s literature are primarily children, who are very different from adult readers in terms of cognitive level and language preferences.Reception aesthetics emphasizes“going towards the reader”and the subjective initiative of the reader in reading, which provides a unique perspective for the study of C-E translation of children’s literature. After analyzing the linguistic features of the source text, the author finds that at lexical level, there are historical terms,culture-loaded words, and four-character expressions;at syntactic level, there are repeated sentences, sentences without subjects, and long and complex sentences;at textual level, there are chapter titles, pluralistic narrations, and sections of historical-cultural background;at the rhetorical level, there are rhetorical questions, pun, hyperbole, and parallelism. Therefore, under the guidance of reception aesthetics, the translator mainly adopts the methods of literal translation, transliteration, literal translation with annotation, addition, omission, restructuring, and free translation. While retaining the linguistic features and cultural elements of the source text, the translator pays attention to readers’horizons of expectation, satisfies their reading interests, and tells in-depth traditional Chinese mythological and historical stories to foreign children readers in plain language. In conclusion, through the study, the author finds that the reception aesthetics theory is conductive to guide the analysis and translation of historical children’s literature, which can also provide some references for its translation practice. |
