The report is based on an E-C translation practice and the source text is an excerpt from a children’s fiction The List.Written by an Irish writer Patricia Forde,The List tells a story in which a girl called Letta, the apprentice of wordsmith, chooses to fight for language and words in a post-disaster world rebuilt after the melting of polar icecaps. As a translator, the translation of children’s literature calls for much more importance attached to the requirement, preference and acceptance of its child readers for the sake of their particularity.Under such circumstances, the Reception Aesthetics which centers on the reader and reveals the essence and features of literature by examining the process of receiving and producing effects of literature provides effective guidance for the author. It contains two important concepts,“horizon of expectation”,and “indeterminacy of the text”.Based on these, the author uses the methods of splitting long and complex sentences into short ones, applying rhetorical techniques, and making appropriate adaptations to make the translation more accessible.Besides, the translator pays great attention to the handling of “vacancy of meaning” in the translation process, taking account of the comprehension ability of child readers, solving the difficulties in comprehension caused by language differences, while leaving sufficient space for readers’ imagination. Thus child readers can really give full play to their active role in the generation of the meaning of text and in the creation and continuation of the life of the work. The application of Reception Aesthetics to the translation practice allows the author to have a brand-new understanding of the role of translator,to have a more thorough and accurate realization of the demand of child readers.Meanwhile, this process has made it clear to the author that what qualities should a professional translator has. With all these valuable experience, the author will further improve her translation ability and moves toward the goal of being a more professional translator!...
