This paper, taking the book Susan B.Anthony: On a Woman’s Right to Vote written by the biographer Sjonger,Rebecca as the source text, attempts are made to address translation difficulties at the textual, referential and cohesive levels. The lexical gaps in translating the English native vocabulary, the tendency and inclination in the use of words, the identification of the most authentic expressions when translating phrases and sentences about the author’s inner feelings, and the hidden historical background information and so forth are all problems during the translation.Using Peter Newmark’s communicative translation approach, this paper tries to summarize the translation strategies in informational texts, such as borrowing, transposition, modulation, explicitation, reinventing original sentence structure. This paper contains five chapters.Chapter One introduces Sjonger,Rebecca, the source text, the rationale for this report and its significance.Chapter Two describes the entire translation process in detail. The basic introduction to the core concepts of Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory is included in Chapter Three, which is also a very vital section. The most crucial part in Chapter Four,a case study will be presented at the textual, referential, and cohesive levels.Chapter Five aims to highlight the applicability of communicative translation approaches in translating traditional biographies,as well as to summarize the limitations and recommendations of this translation practice.
