Compared with traditional fuel vehicles,electric vehicles have more advantages in environmental protection and energy saving.And electric vehicles have been expanding in the domestic market in recent years.However,there are still some deficiencies in the field of battery technology,which is the key component of electric vehicles.Western countries have made great achievements in this field,and there are many places worth learning from.Therefore,it has become a necessary task to learn the advanced technology of battery from the west to make up for China’s shortcomings in this regard.In addition,the translator has done some translation work in this field and already has a certain translation foundation.In view of these two points,the translator’s translation work will take the battery charging,battery power,battery resistance and maintenance and repair of automobile battery introduced in the book The Automobile Storage Battery: Its Care And Repair,that is,chapter 6-9 in the book as the object of this translation,and the translation activity will be guided by Newmark’s text type theory.As a scientific text,the source text is rich in information and uses many common words,conjunctions,nominal phrases,compound sentences,etc.And it has the language characteristics of objectivity,language conciseness,preciseness and accuracy.According to the main functions of the text,Newmark divides the text types into three types: information type,appellative type and expression type.Based on Newmark’s text type theory,this thesis is the analysis of the translation skills used in the source text translation in combination with the language characteristics of the source text and differences between English and Chinese.Guided by Newmark’s text type theory,this research report conducts translation research on the source text from three aspects: vocabulary,syntax and discourse.Vocabulary translation skills consist of part-of-speech conversion,determination of collocations,etc.;sentence translation methods mainly include sequential translation,divisional translation and regrouping,etc.;while the skills used in discourse translation are to make implicit logical relations explicit,repeat part of the source text,etc.During this translation process,I realized that battery-related scientific and technological articles are mainly informative texts,which emphasize the content of the source text.Proper translation techniques should be adopted for such type of text in accordance with Newmark’s text type theory so that the source text contents could be transmitted to the target language readers accurately.
