E-C Translation Report On Automobile Drum Brake System Principles And Services

In the era of global economic integration,China has become one of the major automobile consumers in the world.With the continuous emergence of Sino foreign joint venture automobile enterprises,they not only occupy a place in the Chinese market,but also drive the vigorous development of automobile import trade.In order to make consumers have a deep understanding of automotive repair and provide maintenance technicians with experience communications,it is necessary to translate the automotive maintenance manual into Chinese.This translation report is a study of the English-Chinese translation based on the Chapter 12-13(Drum Brake System Principles and Drum Brake System Services)of the book of the Automotive Maintenance & Light Repair.This manual,embodying the structure,maintenance and repair methods of each component of the automotive,is a science and technology text with some language characteristics such as objectivity,language simplicity,rigor and accuracy.Due to the cultural differences between Chinese and English,the translator needs to complete the translation work through reasonable translation strategies when dealing with such a text with rich terms and information.This report adopts the case analysis method,uses the Catford’s translation shifts theory to guide the translation practice.The translator analyzes the strategies that can be used in translating the source text from the perspective of level shifts and category shifts,including the shifts of tenses,plurals and comparatives and structural shifts,class shifts,unit shifts.Therefore,the translator effectively solves translation difficulties of lexis and syntax(passive sentences and compound sentences)in the text.While obtaining the faithful and smooth translated text,it also verifies that the translation shifts theory is instructive and practical in this translation practice.
