A Report On The Translation Of An Excerpt From Braver Than You Think Under The Guidance Of Functional Equivalent Theory

Based on Functional Equivalence theory,this research attempts to discuss the guiding role of functional equivalence theory in the translation of literary texts by taking Braver Than You Think by Maggie Downs as the original text.As a part of literature,Tourism autobiography is of both literary and authenticity.However,there are few studies of the analysis of biographical literature in China,even fewer studies of travel biography.Selecting this literature,the author chooses appropriate translation strategies and methods to translate the first three chapters of Braver Than You Think into Chinese.Narrative oriented,the language of travel biography is simple and plain.And this book contains a lot of scenery descriptions and emotional expressions,with sensitive writing,rich philosophy,and abundant empathy.Functional equivalence theory includes equivalence in vocabulary,syntax,discourse and style.This translation practice report discusses these four aspects respectively.Lexical equivalence is described from the translation of proper nouns,culture-loaded words and foreign words.In the aspect of syntactic equivalence,its translation strategies can be divided into word order conversion,sentence structure reorganization,and addition and subtraction translation.Translation methods,such as reference,link and substitution,are adopted by discourse equivalence to achieve functional equivalence.Through some case studies,this research illustrates the application of functional equivalence theory in literary translation,aiming to provide reference for future studies.
