Ranked as one of the few World Heritage Sites by UNESCO for both natural and cultural heritages,Mount Tai has been drawing the whole world’s attention with its spectacular natural scenery and profound culture foundation, cherished as a great natural museum of excellent Chinese traditional culture and a shining pearl in the treasure houses of Chinese traditional culture and world culture. Therefore,it is of great significance to spread the rich and splendid culture of Mount Tai overseas through precise and vivid translation. This report is derived from the translation task of tourism text in Mount Tai Scenic Tourist Area. The text comprehensively introduces numerous scenic spots, containing rich historical allusions and myths and legends. The complexity and diversity of the source texts, and the high requirements on the quality of translation, have made the translation work more difficult.Supported by Eugene Nida’ s Functional Equivalence Theory, this report provides different translation strategies and methods for different translation focuses. For the translation of a vast amount of culture-loaded words, cultural connotations have been investigated and explored. Therefore, translation strategies such as domestication and foreignization, and translation methods such as transliteration, literal translation, and free translation were adopted to deliver equivalent information to target language readers. For the translation of short sentences and other sentences that contain implicit logical relations, deep logical relations have been combed and sentences have been restructured regardless of the external forms. Thus translation techniques such as division, combination, addition, omission and shift were adopted to reproduce the translation in a way that conforms to the pragmatic habits of target language. It is earnestly hoped that the author’s experience could play a role of inspiration and reference for translation of tourism texts. |
