Since Britain invaded China’s Tibet at the end of the 18th century,it has been trying to put Tibet under its own control, making Tibet an important bargaining chip to counterbalance China.Britain’s ties with modern Tibet have become increasingly close. The British delegation to Lhasa has also become a unique existence in modern times. They are collectively referred to as "Tibet cadres" in Western academic circles.Among them,Richardson was the first one of the British delegation to Lhasa and the last "Tibetan cadre" to withdraw from Lhasa.Based on the analysis of materials and texts, this paper applies the historical analysis method to study the important Tibet-related activities of Richardson and his perception of Tibet, trying to analyze the causes and influences of Richardson’s perception of Tibet, and then reveal the perception of Tibet and the origin of Tibet’s image in the Western academic circles during the process. This article consists of five parts. The first chapter introduces the practical significance and academic value of studying Richardson’s Tibet-related activities and the perception of Tibet, briefly reviews the current research situation at home and abroad, and explains the meaning of the Tibetan view. The second chapter sorts out Richardson’s important Tibetan-related activities. As the head of the British delegation to Lhasa and the head of the Indian delegation to Lhasa,Richardson encouraged the Kasha government of Tibet to engage in secession activities and intervened in Tibet’s internal affairs. After returning from China,he wandered among the "Tibetan independence" forces in various countries in an attempt to continue to divide Tibet from China. The third chapter analyzes Richardson’s understanding of Tibet’s geography, politics, history, religion and other aspects, and the way of shaping "Tibet independence" under the guidance of his Tibetan perception.Richardson’s diplomatic status also makes his political concept of supporting "Tibet independence" throughout it.The second chapter and the third chapter are mutually apparent, that is,Richardson’s Tibetan-related activities and the Tibetan perception are inherently unified.Richardson formed his Tibetan perception in Tibetan-related activities, and the Tibetan perception guides his Tibetan-related activities, and the interaction between the two relies on each other. The fourth chapter evaluates Richardson personally, criticizes Richardson’s perception of Tibet, discusses the causes of Richardson’s view of Tibet, analyzes the logic and influence of western scholars’ cognition of Tibet’s historical status from Richardson’s individual point of view, and analyzes the background, reasons and relationship with the government’s foreign policy of "Tibet independence".The conclusion of the fifth chapter analyzes Richardson’s role in promoting the internationalization of the "Tibet Problem" and the fundamental starting point of Tibetan-related activities, that is,to safeguard the interests of British imperialism and the essence of Richardson’s Tibetan perception.A theoretical correction of the Tibetan independence represented by Richardson will help the international community understand the theoretical basis and essence of the fallacy of "Tibet independence" advocated by some Western anti-China forces and Tibetan separatists, and theoretically escort the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and enter the center of the world political stage. |
