| This report is based on the translation of the book Time for Things: Labor,Leisure,and the Rise of Mass Consumption written by Stephen D.Rosenberg.This book discusses why Americans are inclined to work more time to accumulate goods when productivity has increased rapidly in the United States.Chapter five,selected from this book as the source text of the translation project,discusses the historicity of economic fairness,the history of the legitimacy of wage labor in the United States and the meaning of consumption in the shadow of wage work.The source text of this report belongs to the informative text,which requires higher accuracy and readability when being translated.The author of the report,i.e.,the translator,hence adopts the communicative translation theory proposed by Peter Newmark as the guide to explore some points that are difficult to translate in it on lexical and syntactic levels.At the lexical level,translation techniques such as addition,notation and conversion are employed to investigate proper nouns,technical terms and prepositional phrases.At the syntactic level,division and conversion are used to translate some complex sentences to better transmit the information of the source text without being confined by its form.This report aims to provide some reference to the translation of economic texts,hoping to bring a chance for domestic readers to be informed about economics. |
