Dutch animator Paul Driessen used a unique split-screen narrative to build an unexpected "world of illusion".His exploration and application of the possibilities of lines not only creates highly recognizable animation expressions, but also gives fresh vitality to all objects in the pen.It is easy to see his unique style in the constantly changing lines and the smooth and awkward movements of the characters in the picture.Sometimes according to the needs of narrative,he will divide the screen into two, three, four, eight or even more different parts with lines,so that all the actions are cleverly intertwined, and the narration is free and imaginative. This article takes Driessen’s multi-part screen works as an example to study the split-screen narrative of Paul Driessen’s animation.First,in the context of culture and history, this paper studies the various influences of Driessen’s works and the choice of creation subject matter. His works have the spirit of experiment and pay attention to the depiction of fantasy world separated from reality. His works have an experimental spirit and focus on the depiction of a fantasy world separated from reality. Then analyze the characteristics and expressions of Driessen ’s works that are different from other animation works.Through research,it is discovered that the moments contained in his works are in flux, separated and instability,as well as the unremitting exploration of forms, which has created his distinctive animation narrative mode-split-screen narrative. Then, from the perspective of narrative techniques, combining the three aspects of representative animation works:from the three aspects of diversified narrative technique application, narrative space, and sound narrative,it elaborates how Driessen challenged traditional narrative concepts and the use of pictures to carry out split-screen narrative. The last chapter talks about the significance of Paul Driessen ’s animation split-screen narrative research on the current development of animation and the enlightenment he has gained in specific practice.
