This paper examines Vilhelm Hammersh(?)i’s art through its theme and form, and attempts to shine a light on its lonesome, claustrophobic nature by analysis of specific paintings.Known as the Vermeer of Denmark,Hammersh(?)i captures and observes his subjects through the lens of his inner, visceral emotions, and condenses his 30 years of artistic experiences into his paintings. This paper argues that the “loneliness”expressed in his works does not simply represent the “introverted lonesome nature” of his character, but his reverence for traditional and classical art as well as his attitude of not following any artistic trends of his time.On some level,he can be seen as a herald for the state of loneliness and alienation in contemporary life. The dissertation is divided into four parts. The first being the study of claustrophobic spaces in Hammersh(?)i’s paintings, focusing on the use of solemn buildings, secluded landscapes, and confined rooms. The second discusses the signification of loneliness in his paintings through the use of singular figures with their backs turned and their gaze in the mirror. The third part is an analysis on the composition and structure, his use of calm lines, grayish tones, the instant quality in his technique and his nordic simplicity. The last part attempts to explain the“de-plotting”characteristic of his work through four levels: intimacy and alienation, narrative and non-narrative,new and nostalgic, presence and absence. It is the author’s belief that Hammersh(?)i’s art,in essence, transcends the“narrative” nature of the Danish traditional paintings of his time.It provides the spirit with a new mental structure to rethink things. As the existentialist philosopher Heidegger expains: “loneliness does not isolate us,but brings us closer to the essence of things.” In today’s restless time, the phenomenon of excessive pursuit of form and no content in painting is becoming more and more intense. For painters, what is really important is the things behind the picture, which is related to a person’s soul, life and internal spiritual power.Just as Hammersh(?)i’s painting retains the most essential and simple form of expression for us,the most important thing is Hammersh(?)i’s deep attention and Reflection on the things around us.This is not a personal pastime, but a coupling between the essence of art and publicity. This is the purpose and significance of this study.
