Carl Larsson is one of the influential artists in history who have struggled to find ways to shift between artistic languages in order to develop their own unique artistic language. In the early period,Larsson’s watercolors were characterized by soft and delicate tones and the Barbizon school style of painting with an emphasis on light and color changes, but due to the influence of aesthetic trends such as Japanese Ukiyo-e(color woodcuts)and the Art Nouveau movement,Larsson’s later watercolors were characterized by an emphasis on external contour lines and the creation of a sense of fragmentation in the picture plane. This paper takes the European aesthetic trends of the late 19 th century as a background, places the evolution of Larsson’s painting style in it as an illustrative framework, and analyzes the influence of his numerous pictorial works and the paintings of his contemporaries in other genres on him,in order to discuss the causes and unique value of Larsson’s late watercolor style change. The text also refers to Larsson’s personal experiences in the early stages of his career, and looks at the artist’s origins to understand the formation of his naturalistic aesthetic concepts.Larsson’s watercolor paintings focus on the characteristics of "flatness," "simplicity," and "decorativeness" of the images, forming a highly attractive and personal color expression and pictorial language.Larsson’s condensation of the world of objects through lines, the division of the proportions of the picture, and the placement of colors in different areas are his unique stylistic creations that distinguish him from other painters. In addition, the watercolor paintings not only have the oriental aesthetic of white space, but also sometimes integrate the exquisite Swedish folk art patterns into the picture, forming a unique watercolor work with decorative interest. All these have become the distinctive marks of Larsson’s later watercolor works, and finally reached a recognizable style, which we can call "Larsson style".Finally, the author will devote a great deal of time to discussing the language of line and flatness in Larsson’s later paintings and the reasons for their transformation.By detailing the creation of Larsson’s unique graphic language schema and the formation of his aesthetic character in a multicultural context, the author will also elaborate on the insights gained from it from the perspective of the creator and practitioner.
