With the continuous development of the overall economy and the increasing improvement of living standards, people’s material needs can be met by productivity, and the cultural needs at the spiritual level are gradually paid attention to,which has become an important basis to measure the quality of life. The cultural market also shows its brilliance in stimulating consumption and economic growth. However, the imbalance between urban and rural development in China is also prominent in cultural consumption. There is an obvious gap between rural residents and urban residents in product selection and consumption level. It is difficult for rural residents to enjoy the same level of cultural products and services as urban residents. The large gap between urban and rural areas has become an important factor restricting the further development of economy. At the same time, the continuous development of Internet technology has injected new momentum into the cultural industry. The "Internet +culture" enables people to break geographical restrictions and enjoy more diversified cultural experiences.Rural residents also have more consumption choices, which helps to promote cultural consumption to a higher level. In this context, the focus of this thesis is how the development of the Internet will affect urban and rural residents while driving the prosperity of cultural industry, and whether it will help to narrow the gap between urban and rural areas.Starting from theory, this thesis analyzes the phenomenon of dual economic structure in China, analyzes the adverse impact of information asymmetry and search process on rural residents in the cultural market, and then discusses the important role of Internet development in promoting the development of cultural industry and residents’ consumption, and theoretically demonstrates that Internet development plays an important role in the cultural consumption of urban and rural residents in China. Then it empirically analyzes the difference of the impact of Internet development on urban and rural residents’ cultural consumption from three perspectives:the impact of urban and rural areas, the impact of different levels of groups and different regions. In this analysis process, this thesis first constructs the index system and uses the principal component analysis method to comprehensively measure the Internet development level.Taking the panel data of 31 provincial administrative regions in China from 2006 to 2019 as samples, this thesis establishes an individual fixed effect panel model to analyze the impact of Internet development on the cultural consumption of urban and rural residents in China, and uses the panel quantile regression method,Analyze the changing trend of the effect of the Internet on urban and rural residents under different consumption levels.Considering the different development situations of various regions in China, this thesis also divides the East, middle and west regions to investigate the role of the Internet in different regions. In addition,in order to further explore whether there is a spatial effect relationship between Internet development and cultural consumption of urban and rural residents in different regions, this thesis also constructs a spatial Dobbin panel model to analyze whether there is a spatial spillover effect that helps to narrow the cultural gap between urban and rural areas on the basis of the impact of Internet development on the region. From the empirical test results,we can get the following results: first, the development of the Internet is conducive to improving the cultural consumption level of urban and rural residents, and the improvement range of rural residents is greater than that of urban residents, which reflects that the Internet plays an important role in enriching the spiritual and cultural life of rural residents, and helps to narrow the gap between urban and rural areas.Second, through the test of consumption levels at different levels by quantile regression,it is found that the role of Internet development on people with lower cultural consumption is stronger than that of people with higher consumption, which suggests that we should pay attention to the use of Internet technology to provide strong support for balanced development in the process of future development.Third, there are regional differences in the role of Internet development in urban and rural cultural consumption. It has the strongest stimulating effect on the west, followed by the East and the weakest in the middle. In terms of the difference between urban and rural effects, only the effect in the central region of urban residents is lower than the national average, but only the effect in the western region of rural residents is higher than the national level.Fourth, the development of Regional Internet can not only play a role in the region, but also play a role in the development of similar regions. It can narrow the gap between urban and rural cultural consumption. It once again shows that we should make good use of the opportunity of Internet development and make full cooperation and coordinated development among regions.Fifth, some of the selected control variables also show special effects,in which the improvement of house price level helps to improve the cultural consumption level of urban residents, but is not conducive to rural residents;Government financial investment shows a reverse effect that is not conducive to cultural consumption.Based on the above research conclusions,in order to give better play to the role of the Internet in cultural consumption and further narrow the gap between urban and rural areas, the following suggestions are put forward: first, promote the construction of urban and rural public cultural service system;Second, innovate and develop the cultural industry according to the regional characteristics;Third, increase residents’ income and enhance consumption capacity.
