| Improving the effectiveness of English teaching has long been an important topic for English teachers. The Compulsory English Curriculum Standards 2022 Edition points out that improving teaching effectiveness needs to follow the principle of the alignment of teaching-learning-evaluation.Keeping the alignment means teaching objectives, teaching activities and assessments are highly aligned with each other;teaching activities and assessments should be designed based on teaching objectives. It can be seen that teaching objectives are of great importance in ELT.However,in practical teaching process, problems still exist with the design of teaching objectives.Previous researches illustrated the importance of the principle of the alignment of teaching-learning-evaluation and teaching objectives, while researches on the effect of the principle of alignment on teaching objectives are few.Reading class as one of the main classes in ELT,it aims at improving students’ language abilities from several aspects and takes up a large proportion in Senior High School Entrance Examination. Therefore, taking reading class as an example to explore the effect of the principle of alignment on teaching objectives in practical teaching process is of great importance. In view of this,an action research, which took reading class as an example, was conducted to explore the effect of the principle of the alignment of teaching-learningevaluation on the design and fulfillment of teaching objectives.Miss L and her class of a junior middle school from Chongqing were chosen as participants.Three questions will be discussed in the study: 1.“What is the status quo of the design and fulfillment of teaching objectives in reading class?” 2.“Supported by the principle of the alignment of teaching-learning-evaluation,can the teacher promote the effectiveness of teaching objective design in reading class? If yes, which aspects are improved?” 3.“Supported by the principle of the alignment of teaching-learning-evaluation,to what extent can the teacher promote objective fulfillment in reading class?”The action research lasts for a semester, which consists of preliminary research and two rounds of action research. The goal of preliminary research is to explore the status quo of Miss L’s teaching objective design and fulfillment in reading class, which provides basis for the following research. The degree of objective fulfillment is low in reading class in preliminary research.Blurry teaching objectives and few knowledges about the principle of alignment can explain this. The first-round action research is the phase of trial.According to problems found out,the first-round action research improves teaching objectives with the help of Bloom’s Taxonomy of Education Objectives,Curriculum Standards,ABCD and then designs teaching activities and assessments correspondingly. The result shows the degree of objective fulfillment is increased. The second-round action research is the stage of improvement and completion.Based on problems in first-round action research, the second-round action adopts some measures to improve. The degree of objective fulfillment is further improved. The action research reveals that with the guidance of the principle of the alignment of teaching-learning-evaluation,the effectiveness of teaching objectives can be improved from two aspects: one is content, the other is description. The content is designed by following core competencies and teaching materials and the description of teaching objectives is more specific and measurable.Meanwhile, designing teaching plans based on the principle of alignment can promote the fulfillment of teaching objectives. Finally, based on the result, implications on how to promote the design and fulfillment of teaching objectives on the basis of the principle of the alignment of teaching-learning-evaluation are illustrated. |
