| John Ruskin,the most famous art critic in England and The Victorian era in the early 19 th century,whose influence covers painting,architecture,design,art education and many other aspects.Ruskin devoted his whole life to the field of art criticism and social criticism,including five volumes of Modern Painters and works on social criticism,such as For the Laters and Ethics of Dust.Based on the five volumes of Modern Painters,this paper aims to summarize Ruskin’s theories about landscape painting and his outstanding contributions in the field of landscape painting.This paper is divided into six parts.The first part(introduction)mainly summarizes the research background,research status,research significance and innovation points,analyzes the research background of Ruskin’s concept of landscape painting and previous studies,as well as the value and significance of Ruskin’s artistic concept of landscape painting,paving the way for the following text.The second part(Chapter 1)studies and analyzes Ruskin’s life,artistic practice and theoretical works related to landscape painting,with the basic introduction of Modern Painters in five volumes,providing factual basis for the later elaboration of several important concepts.The third part(Chapter 2)through the era background,religious belief,"picturesque" concept,romantic concept of four aspects of exploration,find out the reason of Ruskin’s concept of landscape painting gradually formed,to provide theoretical basis for the formation of his theory of landscape art thought.The fourth part(chapter 3)is the focus and difficulty of this paper.It mainly analyzes Ruskin’s concept of landscape painting.Through the four aspects of landscape painting observation,natural observation,moral standard and technique expression,it analyzes and exemplifies the real and moral concept extracted from Modern Painter to prove its deep connotation.The view of landscape painting mainly discusses Ruskin’s carding and analysis of ancient Greek,middle century and modern landscape painting;The view of Nature mainly discusses Ruskin’s pursuit of the expression of authenticity in the way of viewing landscape paintings.Taking the works of Turner,a painter he highly respected,as an example,compared with those of his predecessors,it discusses Ruskin’s concrete expression of reality in the sky,earth,water,plants and other natural scenes.The moral standard mainly discusses Ruskin’s pursuit of natural reality in landscape painting,emphasizing the importance of morality,and the relationship between emotion,imagination and reason under moral standard and themselves.The performance of techniques mainly discusses Ruskin’s requirements and standards for painters’ techniques on the basis of viewing,reality and morality.The fifth part(chapter 4)mainly expounds Ruskin’s concept of landscape painting on the later artistic schools and social thoughts of the impact and significance.As Ruskin’s artistic thoughts involve a variety of art categories,his thoughts are of great significance not only in landscape painting and even in painting,but also in architecture,design,literature and other aspects,bringing undeniable creative inspiration and ideas,which can not be ignored and has continued to this day.The sixth part(conclusion)mainly answers two questions: one is the value of Ruskin’s artistic concept of landscape painting,the other is the significance of Ruskin’s theory of landscape painting to the contemporary society.Ruskin’s ideas of reality and morality in landscape theory are of practical significance to the harmonious concept of material and spiritual civilization in art circle and human society. |
