This translated material is selected from the first chapter of John Ruskin's Labour: A Study of Ruskin's Social Theory by P.D.Anthony.This chapter describes main characteristics of Ruskin's works and his various views on paintings,architecture,art and morality,from which a general law that art of any country symbolizes the country's ethical life as well as its social and political virtues is summarized.From art criticism to social criticism,this part demonstrates Ruskin's moral connotation on the one hand and his reflection on capitalism and industrial civilization and his concern about ecological problems and meaning of life on the other hand.This report mainly consists of four parts.The first part briefly introduces the translation background including the material source,the author and the significance of this material.Ruskin's ideas have an essential impact on contemporary art and society,deserving our deep studying.The following part is translation process.Adequate preparation before translation plays a basic role in successful translating.The post review and case analysis are focused on the difficulties in translation process.Translation case analysis is arranged in the third part,describing the difficulties met in translating process from three aspects of lexical terms,syntax and specific background,presented with specific cases.The last part shows the experience and gains from this practice so that they can well serve to guide the future translation.
