Vincent d’Indy(1851-1931),as one of the most outstanding French composers in the second half of the 19 th century,played a crucial role in the development of the French symphony.In the Symphony No.2 in B Flat Major,composed in 1902,not only the creation standard he expected for the French symphony genre was expounded,but also his bold exploration of modern creation techniques was revealed.In this paper,taking Vincent d’Indy’s Symphony No.2 in B Flat Major as the research object and its harmonic technique as the research content,started respectively from the application of mode materials,the vertical structure organization,the horizontal harmonic progression and so on,the analysis and summary were conducted from two perspectives of traditional and modern,so as to further sort out the harmony thinking of composers in music creation.The main body of this paper was divided into four chapters: In the first chapter,the era background,creative thinking and musical form structure of the creation of The Second Symphony were grasped as a whole to provide certain theoretical support for the research of harmony;In the second chapter,the analysis was conducted from the application of mode materials,and the technical characteristics of diatonic scale,mode synthesis,polytonality and so on were organized and summarized;In the third chapter,it was a basic material research for harmony,exploring the organization of longitudinal pitch;In the fourth chapter,it was about the research on the logic of the horizontal harmony progression,and the summary was conducted from the functional harmony,color harmony and linear thinking;The last part of the conclusion made a comprehensive summary for Vincent d’Indy’s personalized harmony.In this paper,it was believed that after the precipitation of the stage of "romanticism" and "nationalism",Vincent d’Indy had created and obtained a whole new artistic life in the course of experimenting with modern harmony techniques.
