A Report On The Translation Of Narrative Medicine:Bridging The Gap Between Evidence-Based Care And Medical Humanities(Chapters 2-4)

This paper is a translation report.The original text selected for the translation practice is from Chapter 2 to Chapter 4 of the book Narrative Medicine: Bridging the Gap between Evidence-based Care and Medical Humanities.The excerpts provide insights into narrative medicine from mythology,literature,research experience,and other aspects and advocate that future doctors should conduct medical diagnosis and treatment based on understanding patients’ narrative stories and overall situations to provide patients with more meaningful and fully informed treatment methods.The excerpts aim to arouse the empathy awareness of medical staff and strengthen the humanistic spirit of medicine.The experts are a type of narrative medicine-related texts,which has the linguistic features of other medical texts,such as specialized terms and long and complicated sentences.At the same time,because of its unique narrative characteristics,it also has the narrative and emotional features of literary texts.In response to this difficulty in translation,the translator applies Steiner’s hermeneutic translation theory in the translation process,namely the four steps of “trust,aggression,incorporation,and compensation” as theoretical support.In the first step of trust,the translator gave great trust to the translatability of the book based on his strong interest and deep understanding of narrative medicine.In the second step of aggression,the translator made an intrusive understanding of the relevant text,and gave an overall grasp of the original emotion,style,narrative characters and background.Through translation,the translator reproduced the original emotion to a greater extent,and solved the translation difficulties caused by cultural differences.In the third step of incorporation,the translator transformed the original text by adjusting the sentence structure,converting the voice,and using other methods,thus faithfully delivering the content of the original.In the last step of compensation,the translator adopted amplification and annotation to compensate for the imbalance that may arise during the aggression and incorporation of the two languages.This report has verified that Steiner’s four steps of hermeneutic translation of “trust,aggression,incorporation,and compensate” run through the whole process of translation practice of narrative medical texts,which can provide strong theoretical support for the translation of narrative medical texts and some references for the translation of the same type of texts.
