Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)is a flower rooted in the fertile soil of Chinese culture. The language and theoretical system of traditional Chinese medicine are the essence of the thoughts of thousands of years of TCM experts. The study of English translation of TCM materials is a necessary way to promote the internationalization of TCM.By exploring the disciplinary characteristics and laws of TCM language, translators can better interpret TCM theories and understand TCM thoughts to spread Chinese culture to the outside world. The source text of this report comes from “Luo Dalun Jiao Ni Zi Bu Zhi Dao: Pi Bu Xu,Shen Bu Kui,Xin Shen An(Luo Dalun Teaches You the Methods of Nourishing the Body: No deficiency in Spleen and Kidney with Calm State of Mind)”.This book tells the readers how to nourish the body under the guidance of TCM theories. After understanding the characteristics of the source text and analyzing the difficulties encountered in the translation process, the author of this report chose George Steiner’s hermeneutic translation theory as the guiding theory of this translation report and took the first two chapters of the original book as examples to analyze the application of four steps of hermeneutic translation theory in TCM texts.Based on the four steps(trust, aggression, incorporation and compensation)in hermeneutic translation theory, the author improved the quality of target text. After trusting the source text and the original author, the author of this report understood the deep meaning of source text. And then, the author translated cultural information contained in the source text by incorporation and compensation to avoid the lack of cultural information caused by cultural and language differences between Chinese and English.Through this translation practice, the author find that although there are many differences between Chinese and English, translators can still promote the dynamic balance between the source text and the target text with flexible use of translation methods to build a communication bridge between the original author and target readers.Hermeneutic translation theory also clarifies translators’ thinking in the translation process and helps to convey important information in the source text to the target readers.
