Abstract/Summary:
Taste of Yao Nationality is the promotional brochure of Yao Nationality Youcha Catering Company,a local catering enterprise in Nanning,Guangxi.By offering traditional distinctive dishes of Yao nationality,this company strives to promote the dietary culture of Yao people in Gongcheng,Guilin.Over the past few decades,the successful hosting of China-ASEAN Expo,China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit and Nanning International Folk Song Festival in Nanning have promoted the in-depth development and cooperation of Guangxi and the ASEAN countries in terms of economy,trade and people-to-people exchanges.Taking this opportunity,the company decides to translate the brochure,so as to enhance its economic performance and influence both at home and abroad,as well as better introduce the traditional distinctive food and culture of Yao nationality to foreign friends.This report is based on the translation of Taste of Yao Nationality.Guided by the communicative translation proposed by Peter Newmark,the author analyzes the concrete difficulties she encountered during the translation and puts forward with corresponding solutions.During the translation process,the author mainly encountered four difficulties,namely,the translation of names of Yao’s distinctive dishes,four-character phrases,non-subject sentences and the translation of long sentences.When translating dish names,literal translation,free translation with annotation and transliteration with annotation are adopted,aiming to present the basic information about the dish and arouse the interests of target readers,as well as introduce the cultural connotations to them.While handling four-character phrases,omission,literal translation and free translation are applied to improve the readability of the target text.As to the translation of non-subject sentences,the author adopts subject addition and voice shift to make the translation conform to the language habits of the target language.In the translation of long sentences,four methods,including division,combination,reorganization and synthetic method,are applied by the author for the sake of conciseness and clarity,striving to present target readers a similar effect as what readers of the source text have.To sum up,the translation of promotional materials of catering company concerning distinctive food of ethnic minorities can be guided by communicative translation theory,which focus on target readers and the effect of the translation.In light of this,multiple methods can be applied flexibly based on the translation purpose to improve the acceptability and readability of the translation.
