A Report On C-E Translation Of Guests’ Speeches At The China-ASEAN Production Capacity And Investment Cooperation Forum

Nowadays,global economic cooperation has made great strikes and contacts among regions are becoming increasingly close.Under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative,the cooperation between China and ASEAN countries is booming.At the China-ASEAN Production Capacity and Investment Cooperation Forum(hereinafter referred to as “forum”),representatives from various parties shared experiences and opinions for further cooperation.The translator participated in the preparatory work during his internship at the Development and Reform Commission of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region,and one of his duties was to translate 7 Chinese speeches with a total of 14 thousand words.These speeches,as the reliable sources for cooperation and service,are conducive to both leaders from ASEAN countries and representatives of enterprises for a better understanding of China’s policies practiced by the government,enterprises,and financial institutions.The translation practice report,with translation process and case analysis as its focus,demonstrates the strategy and techniques applied in informative and vocative-function texts.Practicing in line with Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory,the translator provides examples which include four-character structures,non-subject sentences,and run-on sentences,etc.to illustrate the translation techniques applied at the lexical and syntactic levels.Meanwhile,the translator also analyzes the adaption of cohesive devices and the translation of rhetorical devices at the textual level.As the “targetlanguage-reader-centered” principle highlighted by the communicative theory,the translator tends to adopt internationally recognized or regionally agreed expressions in the target text in order to realize the purpose of “conveying information”.Through the translation practice,the translator has not only improved his theoretical attainment and proficiency in various translation techniques,but also enhanced his understanding of the profession.He realizes that more efforts are needed on his way to be a qualified professional translator.
