A Study Of The Characterization And Singing Of "Haitang" In The Folk Opera "Yimeng Mountain"

The folk opera Yimeng Mountain is an original Chinese folk opera composed in the historical context of China’s war period,and is a masterpiece of red-themed folk opera in the new era of China,which has attracted the interest of many researchers and learners upon its performance.As a student of the Master of Fine Arts degree in folk vocal music,I have performed all the excerpts from Yimeng Mountain during my three years of postgraduate study and stage practice.Under the guidance of my supervisor,I have studied and considered all the excerpts from the opera,whether in terms of the compositional approach,the portrayal of the character of "Haitang",or the singing of "Haitang".In the course of my studies,I have taken a great deal of notes and have sung almost all of the "Begonia" in many competitions and concerts.Therefore,I did not hesitate to choose this topic for my dissertation,taking into account my long study and stage practice.As a professional degree holder,the research for this dissertation comes from my own continuous stage practice over the past three years.Whether it is the study of the repertoire,the singing of all the repertoire in the repertoire,or the final presentation of these on stage,the research is based on my own practice,and the theory is linked to reality.The full text consists of an introduction,a body and a conclusion.The introductory part of the essay is an overview of the reasons for the selection of the topic,the current state of research and innovations,and a classification of the current state of research to provide a theoretical basis for the writing of the essay.The first part of the main text analyses the background and musical characteristics of the opera.The second part focuses on the characterisation of the opera’s "Begonia".The third and fourth parts of the paper focus on the musical analysis of the three classical operas,and on the analysis of the performance of the opera in the light of one’s own practice.The fifth part discusses the perceptions and experiences after studying folk opera based on one’s own singing practice.The concluding section summarises the important points and the value of the discussion.
