| This report is on the simulated SI of the technical seminar of the Digital Economy Conference&Exhibition 2020 on 28thOctober 2020.This conference aims to help audiences better understand China’s digital economy and its recent development during the COVID-19pandemic.A great deal of fuzzy rhetoric is employed in the technical seminar, which makes it difficult for interpreters to understand and interpret immediately.Typical difficulties are as follows:1)difficulties induced by fuzzy words, for example, the fuzzy verb“推进”in referring to boosting the resilience of economic development;2)problems caused by the blending fuzzy rhetoric, for example,“降龙十八掌”;3)issues relating to the logic of defaulting fuzzy rhetoric, for example, the sudden pop up of a fragment sentence of“出口转内销”in the discussion of a conceptual definition causes the loss of clues for reasoning logic. To address the difficulties,Relevance Theory is adopted in this essay. The theory combines the traditional code model and the inferential model together and regards communication as an ostensive-inferential process, which means obtaining the most contextual effect with the least cognitive effort.Based on this theory,I summarized the following strategies:1)for stable fuzzy rhetoric, addition, negation, and explication are employed to reduce the cognitive effort of the audience;2)for temporary fuzzy rhetoric, substitution and clarification are used to maintain a desirable contextual effect for the audience.Under the guidance of Relevance Theory, the study referred to the contextual clues in the source language to solve the problems and help interpreters facilitate the cognitive processing during Chinese-English interpretation. The study contributes to the study of interpreting Chinese fuzzy rhetoric and gives suggestions to those having similar problems in the simultaneous interpretation of academic speeches. |
