The First National Conference on Intelligent Construction was held in Shanghai during December 16-17,2020.In this report,10,940 words were selected from two reporters’ statements at the conference for simulated interpreting practice. In the interpreting process, the interpreter found that there were a lot of fuzzy cohesive devices in the source material. It is well known that in Chinese, the logic of the text mainly relies on semantic implication and mostly adopts implicit cohesion such as reiteration, reference, omission rather than explicit cohesion means. On the contrary,English is hypotaxis, and it emphasizes the logical rigor within sentences, which is mostly reflected by explicit cohesive devices. As a result,in the C-E simultaneous interpretation, how to properly deal with the difficulties caused by fuzzy cohesive devices in the source text became the most challenging task for the interpreter.According to Halliday’s definition and classification of cohesive devices, the interpreter summarized the interpretation difficulties into three types:(1)difficulties caused by fuzzy lexical cohesion;(2)difficulties caused by fuzzy reference,and(3)difficulties caused by fuzzy conjunction.Under the guidance of the interpretive theory, the interpreter found some quite practical and effective tactics in dealing with those difficulties:(1)omission and integration to deal with fuzzy lexical cohesion;(2)explicitation and simplification to deal with fuzzy reference;(3)replacement,amplification and reorganization to deal with fuzzy conjunction.Based on the simulated C-E simultaneous interpreting, this report aims to provide theoretical and practical guidance for interpreters to targeted practicing and help interpreters produce high-quality interpretation by effective means.
