Farewell painting sprouted in the Wei and Jin dynasties,gradually took shape in the Song dynasty,and reached their peak in the Ming dynasty.In the Ming Dynasty,the composition pattern of "farewell on the river bank" was the mainstay,and it was given full play in the hands of artists,mainly the Four Artists of the Ming Dynasty.The inspiration for farewell pictures originated from farewell poems,and then went through the stage of poetic painting of farewell poems,and in the Ming Dynasty,it began to move toward an art form of self-regulation or fusion of poetry and painting.The traditional "farewell on the riverbank" painting has its own aesthetic symbols and focuses on the deeper communication between the painting and the text.The first chapter provides a longitudinal overview of the historical lineage of Farewell painting,from poetic farewell paintings to independent Farewell painting to the heyday of Farewell painting in the Ming Dynasty,and analyzes the external and internal reasons for the formation of the four Ming artists’ farewell pictures.The second chapter takes the spatial and temporal dimensions as the entry points,and carefully explores the pictorial expressions of the works of the four Ming artists on the theme of farewell.In the spatial dimension,we summarize the imagery that often appears in the farewell pictures of the four Ming artists,and elaborate on their cultural background and history in terms of poetry and painting,and examine the temporal expression of the farewell-themed works in terms of both figurative and abstract time.The third chapter analyzes the literal expressions in the works on the theme of farewell,mainly from two perspectives,namely,the unity and separation of illustration and text,and the interplay between the two in the works on the theme of farewell.The fourth chapter explores the deeper relationship between the graphic and textual aspects of the farewell theme.The fourth chapter elaborates the deeper interaction between text and pictures,analyzes the expression characteristics of both poetry and landscape painting,and summarizes why painting and literature,as two art disciplines far apart,can achieve communication.
