This translation practice report is excerpted from chapter 14 to 16 of Chinese Buddhism:a volume of sketches, historical, descriptive and critical written by Joseph Edkins. The source text mainly introduces Buddhist images, monasteries, instruments and ceremonies, which has a total of 11,255 words.Published in 1976,this book elaborates on Buddhist history and culture in an objective language. It has not been translated into Chinese yet. This report adopts CEA Framework proposed by Li Changshuan as an analytical framework and the Theory of Cohesion and Coherence introduced by Halliday and Hasan as a guide to tackle two major translation challenges: the accurate translation of technical terms and coherent translation. Some approaches are provided: using online translation tools to help the translator understand the content with the professional content such as Sanskrit,Latin and technical Buddhist terms;adopting translation methods such as diction, amplification, interpretation and correcting;searching parallel texts for reference. This work is completed by the translator for more than a year. The translator hopes to provide references for readers interested in Buddhist culture and translation learners in their subsequent studies.
