A Practice Report On Textual Cohesion And Coherence In Chinese Translation Of Indonesia In A Reforming World Economy Under The Strategies Of The Adaptation Theory

This practice report is based on the adaptation theory,and focused on the theory of cohesion and coherence.This paper has selected the first three chapters of Indonesia in a Reforming World Economy:Effects on Agriculture,Trade and the Environment as translated materials,and discussed the application of the adaptation theory in regards to the cohesiveness and coherence of the text.The aim is to provide some guidance for the translation regarding the text of economy and trade.Due to the discrepancies between the Chinese culture and the Western culture,there are several incongruities in the translation.The salient problems identified in the translation practice are the inconsistency of cohesive devices,the incoherence of semantics and the incongruities between explicit coherence and implicit coherence.In order to deal with the problematic inconsistencies of cohesive devices,the solutions might include:reference cohesion through structural adaptation;substitution cohesion through structural adaptation;and lexical cohesion through structural adaptation.In reference to semantic incoherence,the possible solutions are:amplification coherence through dynamic adaptation;reversing coherence through dynamic adaptation;and division coherence through dynamic adaptation.With respect to differences between explicit and implicit coherence,the solutions are:the hiding of explicit relationship through context adaptation;the clarifying of implicit relationships through context adaptation;and the logical reconstruction through context adaptation.The translation practice and the case analysis indicates that when we address the Chinese translation of the text of economy and trade,we can adopt the principle of adaptation theory and achieve the aim of cohesion and coherence of discourses.The adaptation theory has played a prominent role in the analysis of textual cohesion and coherence and the significance for the translation of this text material.
