A Report On The Chinese Translation Of Inter-Ocean Hunting Tales(chapters Ⅰ To Ⅴ)

The source text of this report is exerted from chapters 1 to 5(12600 words)of Inter-Ocean Hunting Tales published in 1908 and written by American writer Edgar F.Randolph.In the early 20 th century when North America is well supplied with game,the author writes a series of hunting tales which takes place in widely separated parts of the United States and Canada.Reading these tales is a pleasure in recalling the vivid hunting process and a tool for experiencing exotic western culture.Hunting is regarded as a challenging sport.During hunting,the author has to strive to get the ideal animals and the culture and spirit of hunting in this book is worth learning.The source text,a narrative prose that is somewhat informal and lacking in literary finish,focuses on narrative and realistic style.Therefore,to convey the meaning and reproduce the linguistic style of the source text is a key challenge for the translator.Guided by Professor Li’s translation framework of “comprehension,expression and adaptation”,this report analyzes the problems encountered in the translation process,keeps the linguistic style of the narrative prose,and pursues the smooth and the fluency of translation to improve the readability of the translation.In terms of comprehension,the translator analyzes the translation difficulties at all levels of the source text from the three levels of lexicon,syntax and discourse;In the process of expression,the translator analyzes the translation that has used three methods:conversion of part of speech,change of the voices and use of Chinese idioms;In terms of adaptation,three translation methods: amplification,omission and division are applied with so as to make the translation closer to the source text and increase the readability of the translationFinally,it is the hope of the translator that more examples and research ideas of literary translation can be inspired by the summary of the problems of the translation and the way of solving them.
