In recent years, the integration of AI technology and healthcare has been deepening, and the scale of China’s healthcare AI market is growing at a rapid pace.As one of the most important forums in the field of AI in China, the China Artificial Intelligence Summit(CAIS)provides a platform for in-depth communication between domestic and international AI industry insiders. The interpreter selected the “AI +Healthcare” sub-forum of the 5th CAIS as the material for simulated simultaneous interpreting. This report chooses Dr.Li Kaifu’s opening speech with the theme “The Age of Flying AI” from among those who spoke at the forum.By reviewing previous summit materials, the interpreter discovered that such summits were typically highly specialized, with a large amount of information as well as numerous tables and statistical charts. Therefore, for the audience to easily absorb what the speaker said, the speaker’s presentation is usually accompanied by visual aids, the majority of which are Power Points. As a result, visual aids played a significant role in this simultaneous interpreting, with both benefits and challenges. The interpreter summarizes three benefits and challenges of visual aids respectively in simultaneous interpreting. On the one hand, visual aids can assist the interpreter in sorting out logic and outline, predicting subsequent content, and reducing listening load;on the other hand, they would also present challenges for interpreters since the visual aids available give rise to over-reliance on the text, distraction, and increased cognitive load in simultaneous interpreting. To address these issues, the interpreter drew heavily on Gile’s Effort Model to develop three strategies to tackle the difficulties of interpreting incurred by visual aids, namely anticipation, summarizing, and reformulation. After the practice, the interpreter conducted a post-interpreting reflection and summary of this simultaneous interpreting.
