| As inequity in education is compounded by Covid-19 pandemic, all countries are exploring how to establish an equitable learning environment. The interpreter completes the mock English-Chinese consecutive interpreting based on the first installment of Education Equity Summit Series held by the U.S.Department of Education,in hope of helping educators in China get access to best practices abroad of promoting equity in education and making contribution to rebuilding of an equitable education system. The speech in this meeting features redundancy and semantic or logic fuzziness, resulting in weak relevancy and poor communicative effect. However,Relevance Theory can be used to enhance communicative effect and deliver the intended meaning.According to this theory, cognitive context is the basis of communication and optimal relevance is its key to success. To make sure the target interpreting have the same cognitive content and produce the same effect as the source speech, the interpreter seeks relevance based on the linguistic context when encountering unfamiliar idioms and terms and draw inference based on cognitive environments when semantic fuzziness occurs to enhance comprehension. In addition, the interpreter adopts addition, compression and logical reformulation strategy to cope with such challenges as fragmented sentences, redundancy and logic fuzziness, achieving optimal relevance and thus maximizing communicative effect. The interpreter has recognized her weakness in consecutive interpreting, and hopes to improve her interpreting skills via self-assessment and feedback from other interpreters and listeners and provide guidance for those interpreters who face similar challenges in interpreting. |
