The Study Of Strategies Of Optimal Relevance Acquisition In Intepreting Process Under The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

Interpreting plays an important role in the world’s political, economic and cultural exchange. It is a vital tool of information communication, also undertakes the coordination between different cultures. With the increasing number of foreign activities, China needs more interpreters to do more interpreting tasks. In order to promote the development of interpreting career, experts and scholars at home and abroad hold a lot of interpreting practices and theories research and discussions.Under relevance theory, interpreting is not only a communicative activity, but also an ostensive-inferential process. Relevance Theory offers more useful help for experts and scholars from a new cognitive point of view. That is why it causes more and more attention. This paper, based on relevance theory, selects the senate speech of Xi Jinping in Mexico as the key study. This paper aims to explore how to use relevance theory to guide the interpretation. Paper also carries detail discussion on subjective and objective factors that influence the interpreter to obtain optimal relevance and the existing problems in interpreting process.Through interpreting practices and case analysis, this paper draws following conclusions:Under relevance theory, at the initial stage of the source language input, the interpreter will summary effective communicative intention based on the speaker’s informative intention, then interpreter will get optimal relevance. Interpreter needs to take the cultural background, habit of language usage and other factors of target audiences into consideration at the stage of target language output. This paper uses several strategies to obtain the effortless and effective target language context, for example, reduction of word meaning, sentence structure switch. This paper applies the relevance theory into practice, and hope to have a certain guiding significance to the interpreting practices.
