Abstract/Summary:
This report is based on the translation of Chapter One and Chapter Two of Overload:How Good Jobs Went Bad and What We Can Do about It which is co-authored by Erin L.Kelly and Phyllis Moen.The source text discusses reasons for work overload in the IT industry and proposes the “STAR” initiative to improve employees’ physical and mental health and enhance enterprises’ economic performance.Furthermore,this translation practice provides a valuable reference for solving work overload under the “996”schedule for Chinese enterprises.The source text is classified as an informative text on enterprise management.The translation of this text type requires the translator to convey accurate information and emphasize the response of target readers.These requirements are in line with the translation criteria of Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory – “conveying accurate information” and “generating a similar response”.Hence,Nida’s functional equivalence theory is applicable for translating the informative text on enterprise management.Under the guidance of this theory,corresponding translation methods are applied to solving difficulties from lexicon,syntax,and discourse.At the lexical level,annotation is applied to translating terminologies into standardized expressions;idiomatic translation is adopted to convey connotations of jargon.At the syntactic level,split translation is employed to deal with the syntactic structures of long and message-intensive sentences,conforming to the syntactic habit of the target language-“run-on” sentences;addition is used to translate coordinate constructions,conforming to habitual collocations of the target text and conveying logical relations of the source text;rearrangement is used to translate character depiction sentences,emphasizing the original writing purpose.At the textual level,textual cohesion and coherence are achieved by adding connectives and omitting pronouns.In conclusion,the report summarizes corresponding translation methods to solve the difficulties encountered in this translation practice.These translation methods are applicable to translate English informative text on enterprise management into Chinese and provide a reference for translators who will engage in translating the related text in the future.
