Simplification,in consecutive interpreting, refers to the principle that interpreters consciously simplify the source language and shorten the target language without omitting the main points, especially in semi-unscripted speech. The necessity of the principle can be explained from three aspects:the characteristics of the source language, the relationship between the source language and the target language, and the efficiency of conferences. However, inadequate or excessive simplification is inappropriate:verbose and timeconsuming target language can be caused by the former and omitted main ideas by the latter. There are two main reasons for the author’s inappropriate simplification in the mock conference:firstly,he did not simplify the source language well when listening to it and taking notes,so he misjudged the key points and made the translation verbose or omitted important information;secondly,he sometimes failed to shorten the translation when expressing it,resulting in a redundant translation.Accordingly, the strategies to reduce inappropriate simplification are:when listening, actively analyze the source language and delay taking notes;when expressing, shorten the target language, use techniques such as combining and omitting, and make good use of the characteristics of Arabic.
