| The translation of expressive texts plays a pivotal role in reproducing the writer’s attitudes, emotions, and judgements. There have been many translation studies according to Newmark’s text types at home and abroad. Most of these studies focus on macro perspectives, such as the scientificity and applicability of text types. However, they pay less attention to expressive texts, especially those of the literariness, evaluation of the writer’s attitude and the informativeness and communicativeness of readers. Therefore, with the intention of solving the expression and conveying of the writer-centered expressive text and reproducing the writer’s attitude and conveying information to readers,it is necessary to further explore it.Appraisal Theory,as an extension of systemic functional linguistics(SFL),is mostly used to explore interpersonal meaning in discourse, but seldom involves the translation of specific texts, especially expressive texts.Appraisal Theory aims to realize the interpersonal meaning by analyzing writer’s attitude and emotion in discourse, which is instructive to expressive text that writer’s expression-oriented.At the same time,Appraisal Theory attaches great importance to the writer’s expression and interpersonal meaning, which coincides with writer-oriented expressive text.Under these circumstances, this thesis analyzes the Chinese translation of the first chapter of Pandora’s Jar:Women in the Greek Myths from the perspective of Appraisal Theory and discusses how to evaluate and reproduce the attitudes and emotions of the writer and communicativeness of the readers in the translation of the expressive text.Through the analysis of the source text, this thesis finds that it is of great literariness:it frequently uses proper nouns, allusions, and descriptive words.Meanwhile, this book endeavors to prove its views by using professional expertise such as Latin and Greek and allusions that are familiar to the readers east and west, making it persuasive and readable.Under the guidance of Appraisal Theory, this thesis, taking all the typical features of the source text into consideration, puts forward feasible translation methods from the perspective of reproducing the attitude, engagement, and graduation elements of Appraisal Theory. In terms of the translation of descriptive words, the translator applies semantic and communicative translation strategies to reproduce the writer’s attitude and make readers understand;in terms of proper nouns and Latin and Greek, the translator adopts the methods of zero translation, transliteration, and the technique of addition to reproduce the writer’s expression and convey information to readers;in terms of allusions and Classics, taking the source text and its interpersonal meaning into consideration, the translator also uses semantic and communicative translation strategies to reproduce the writer’s views.Under the guidance of Appraisal Theory, this thesis analyzes the typical features of expressive texts and has a discussion about the feasible translation strategies and methods and techniques to reproduce the writer’s attitude, engagement, and graduation elements of Appraisal Theory. This thesis hopes to provide a fresh angle for future studies and encourage more people to engage in the translation studies of expressive texts. |
