The material of translation practice is selected from the book On Death,Dying and Disbelief by Candace R.M.Gorham,an American professional psychological consultant.Candace mainly analyzes the five stages of sadness,guiding the relatives of the deceased to regulate their emotions and treat others’ comfort rationally.Death education is of great importance,but it is a long way to establish a corresponding system and death service model.Translating the material is meaningful for encouraging individuals to learn death education and do self-psychological counseling.The report on the translation is divided into four parts.The first part describes the source,the author of material and the significance of the translation report.The second part clarifies the translation process.According to the theme,style and expression of the original,the author of the translation report prepares for the translation by referring to psychology and death education materials and states translation steps of proofreading and polishing.In the third part,the author of the translation report selects typical translation examples and analyzes them from four aspects of vocabulary,syntax,discourse and culture.The aspect of vocabulary includes terminology translation,lexical conversion and the sense of words.At the syntactic aspect,negation translation,amplification,division and combined translation are used and the translation of the definite clauses are analyzed.The discourse aspect mainly analyzes the source text and its translation from cohesion and coherence.Considering the cultural differences between Chinese and American and the characteristics of the source text,the author of the translation report studies the translation of idioms,etiquette and other cultures at the cultural aspect.The last part is the summary of translation practice,and the author of the translation report expounds the reflection and experience of death education translation.Through this translation practice,the author of the translation report has strengthened the understanding and application of functional equivalent translation theory and some translation skills,enriched the knowledge in death education,and improved the level of translation in the field.The author of the translation report also fully realizes the significance of software and tools in improving the quality and efficiency of translation.What’s more,the translation contributes to break through the traditional concept of taboo death,makes the relatives of the deceased to adjust their psychological state,encourages more scholars to pay attention to death education and inspires the whole society to form an atmosphere of respect and awe for death.
