Poisonous Skies:Acid Rain and the Globalization of Pollution is a social science book with environmental pollution as the theme. The book focuses on acid rain,a hot social topic in recent years. The material is from chapter one "Creating a global pollution problem",which shows that the pollution disaster in Europe has drawn people’s attention to acid rain and other pollution, thus promoting international cooperation on environmental issues. To translate this social science text, the translator mainly focuses on conveying information rather than following the original form. Therefore, with the guidance of functional equivalence theory proposed by Eugene Nida, the translator adopts the literal and free translation strategies, striving to achieve dynamic equivalence and the accurate transmission in English and Chinese.Specifically, the translator analyses the specific translation from vocabulary, sentence and discourse respectively. As for the vocabulary translation, the translator mainly analyses the difficulties encountered in the translation process from the aspects of the semantic selection, the conversion of part of speech, the extension of word meaning and the translation of proper nouns, aiming to ensure the accuracy of word meaning. As for the sentence translation, the translator mainly discusses the analysis from three methods:word order adjustment, long sentence decomposition and voice transformation in order to achieve the equivalence of sentence meaning in English and Chinese. As for the translation of discourse, the translator analyses the translation from cohesion and coherence based on the feature of the social science text.It mainly focused on the coherent--passage and the equivalent meaning of the discourse. From this translation practice, the translator hopes to provide references for a similar translation in the future. What’s more, the translator has further recognized the various threats acid rain brought to people’s life and health, which can alert the public and raise their attention to environmental pollution,so as to promote the further development of China’s environmental cause.
