The translation practice is based on Chapter Six "Alpine Flats" of Something Hidden in the Ranges:The Secret Life of Mountain Ecosystems. This chapter introduces the alpine tundra, mainly including the process of rock changing into soil on the alpine tundra, the change of rock under the action of water and lightning,as well as the survival strategies of tundra plants and animals.Pikas, marmots and other animals inhabit the alpine tundra of Rocky Mountain National Park, while the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau of China is also the habitat of pikas and marmots. This translation practice not only provides a reference for the relevant research of pikas and marmots in China, but helps readers deepen their understanding of tundra. This translation material is a popular science text.According to the characteristics of the popular science text, skopos theory is adopted as the guiding theory. In the process of translation, the difficulties encountered can be divided into lexical level, syntactic level and textual level. The translator uses different translation skills at each level. At the lexical level, extension and conversion in part of speech are used.At the syntactic level, sentence splitting and reconstructing are adopted. At the textual level, the translator adds logical words to the translation to make the text more cohesive. This translation practice not only enriches the translator’s knowledge in alpine tundra, but also helps the translator master more translation skills. This translation practice improves the translator’s ability to solve problems, and lays a solid foundation for the translation work in the future. This translation practice report can provide help for scholars studying tundra and mountain ecosystems, readers interested in the fields,as well as translators who translate texts of the fields.
