Language situation is the concentrated embodiment of a country’s language practice as well as an important topic in sociolinguistic research.At present,China has basically formed a distinctive theoretical system for the study of language situation.The investigation and study of language situation can give a glimpse of the unique language style of a region,and then provide a scientific basis for the introduction of relevant national language policies and the implementation of regional reasonable language planning.This thesis mainly investigates the language situation of junior middle school students in Yanji City,Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture,including language ability,language use,language environment and language attitude.Based on the descriptive analysis of the basic status of language life,this thesis further explores the factors affecting language ability and the correlation between language ability and other elements.Based on the language ability theory,language attitude theory and the macro language survey theory of sociolinguistics,this thesis mainly obtains the research data through questionnaire survey,supplemented by the means of language test,uses statistical software to statistically analyze the survey results,and tries to answer the following three research questions:(1)what is the language situation of junior middle school students in Yanji City?(2)What are the factors affecting junior middle school students’ language ability?(3)Is there a correlation between the four elements of language situation?The results of the investigation and research show that: first,the language situation of junior middle school students in Yanji city is rich.In addition to the Standard Chinese and Korean,the foreign language course taught by the school is mainly English,and there are very few Japanese candidates;Second,family language use and language environment are basically dominated by Standard Chinese and Korean,while English and Japanese are basically contacted and used in school occasions;Third,the students’ language attitude towards the Standard Chinese is the highest,the affective evaluation of Korean is higher than the cognitive evaluation,and the cognitive evaluation of English is higher than the affective evaluation;Fourth,the effective factors affecting the language ability of junior middle school students in Yanji include students’ gender,age,ethnicity,school type and parents’ ethnicity.Among them,the Korean language ability level of boys is better than that of girls,while the Standard Chinese and English ability of girls are better than that of boys,and the Korean language ability of young students is better than that of high-age students;Fifth,there is a significant positive correlation between language ability and language use,language environment and language attitude,with slight deviation in different sub items.Based on the above survey results,we can have a more comprehensive understanding of the language situations of junior middle school students in this area,which is of positive significance for the promotion of Standard Chinese,the protection and inheritance of ethnic languages in minority areas,and the formulation of bilingual language education policies,and has certain theoretical value for sociolinguistics and ethnology.Then it discusses the Enlightenment of this study to the investigation and research of language situation in ethnic minority areas,summarizes the contributions made,and finally explains some deficiencies.
