A Report On The Chinese-English Translation Of The Boer War(Chapter 28 To 29)

The translation task of this report is based on the English version of The Boer War,with the English version translated by Yvette Rosenberg from the Dutch by Martin Bossenbroek.This book is a lively and informative account of the experiences of three young men,Willem Leyds,Winston Churchill,and Deneys Reitz,in the context of the Boer War.This translation report selects chapters 28-29 of the book as the translation text and the subject matter of the research,in an attempt to provide readers with a general understanding of the Boer War and South African culture through the translation.The translator chooses Nord’s function plus loyalty theory as a macroscopic theoretical guide.In the procedure of translation,the translator aims to realize the intended function of the source text in the target language environment,adhere to the principle of loyalty,and coordinate the relationship among the original author,the target language readers,and the initiator of the translation task.The main content of this report includes five aspects,namely,the introduction,task description,process description,case analysis,and conclusion.In the fourth part of the case analysis,under the guidance of Nord’s theory,the translator discussed the following three aspects.At the level of diction,it mainly involves the selection of word meaning(s)and rendering of idioms.At the syntactic level,the translator took the transformation of sentence structure such as long sentences and passive sentences in E-C translation as an analysis topic,and discussed how to achieve this using sequential translation,word order adjustment,and passive voices.At the discourse level,the lexical cohesion and grammatical cohesion in the source text are analyzed,including reference,substitution,and cohesive words to ensure language coherence and make the information clear and easy to understand.Through the process of sorting out and analyzing the difficulties in the translation of historical texts,the translator found that under the guidance of Nord’s theory,the theory and practice were closely integrated,and finished this translation practice report.As a whole,the translation and the report can provide some experiences and suggestions for the translators who might translate similar types of texts.
