The report is based on the interpreting practice of the author for assembly of agricultural machinery in Dezhou City,Shandong Province. In this event, the author assisted a foreign expert in interpreting the process of installation instructions, facilitating communication during practical construction and providing services for daily affairs.Relevance Theory offers the right tools to arrive at a satisfactory interpretation of an utterance with the aim of achieving communication between two parties.Linguistic meanings of an utterance alone cannot constitute a major obstacle for effective communication. The comprehension and reproduction of real intentions behind original remark also make a big difference to communicative interaction.Based on ostensive-inferential model, the author categorizes interpreting process into two consecutive phases:in the first stage, the author reasons the intention and meaning of the original discourse uttered by the communicator by adopting strategies including anticipation, inquiring, compression, and non-verbal stimulus.During the second phase, the author conveys the speaker’s definite set of intended meanings from the perspective of the recipients’ cognitive environment.Interpretation strategies such as substitution, explication, supplementation and restructuring are employed to modify the audiences’ cognitive schema in a hope to attain similar contextual effects as the original language listeners.By making an analysis of this on-site interpreting practice, the author gains valuable experience and also expects to share her inspirations through the integration of Relevance Theory and interpretation so more interpreters can deliver better interpreting service.
