This is an English-Chinese translation report. The source text is excerpted from The Boer War(Chapters 26 to 27),a monograph authored by M.P.Bossenbroek.Translated into English by Yvette Rosenberg, this monograph was published with the support of the Dutch Foundation for Literature. The excerpted chapters mainly introduce,on the one hand, how the Boers, under the leadership of Botha, attack the enemies by adopting the strategies of guerrilla warfare and bringing entire nation to arms;on the other hand, the situation of the fighting between the Boers and the British army in the condition of power disparity. In this translation report, the translator adopts Li Changshuan’s framework of “comprehension, expression and adaptation” as the framework to analyze the translated text, and illustrates the translating process from the three dimensions above. For the “comprehension” dimension, the translator mainly discloses the problems existing in background information, context and language details;for the “expression”dimension, the translator makes some adjustments to the sentence structures of the excerpted source text to avoid the Europeanizing in its Chinese translation;for the “adaptation” dimension, the translator mainly deletes some unnecessary conjunctions and possessive pronouns, and at the same time, add some related subjects and objects. This translation practice is conducive to enabling the translator to broaden her horizon and thereby gaining a deeper understanding of the Boer War as well as many other expressions related to wars.In addition,it offers a channel for the Chinese readers and scholars to know about the history of the Boer War.Moreover,it is hoped not only that the translator’s translation competence can be improved through this translation practice, but also the translation report can provide some enlightenment to other translators interested in the translating this kind of monograph.
