A Critical Commentary On The E-C Translation Of Chapter 12 And Chapter 13 Of Afghanistan-Challenges And Prospects

This report consists of two parts: the critical commentary and appendices including the original text and its translation.Under the guidance of Eugene A.Nida’s functional equivalence,this critical commentary analyzes the application of five translation methods,including embedding,cutting,splitting-off,reversing,and recasting,in translating Chapter 12 and Chapter 13 of Afghanistan-Challenges and Prospects.Chapter 12 and Chapter 13 examine the diplomatic situation in Afghanistan after the U.S.withdrawal.It is an academic text about international relationship,and its expression is relatively objective,rigorous,and complex.This report applies five translation methods to reproduce the original information in translation and forms the most natural and equivalent translation version.The translation report mainly consists of four parts: the first part gives a brief introduction to the project;the second part introduces Eugene A.Nida and his functional equivalence;the third part is the case study;the last part is the conclusion,which briefly summarizes and analyzes the findings and limitations of this report.There are some findings of the translation practice of this report.It is found that the five translation methods complement each other,and there is a close connection between the translation methods.All of them are produced based on the differences between English and Chinese.In addition,under the guidance of functional equivalence,the combined use of the embedding,cutting,splitting-off,reversing and recasting makes the translation more in line with the established Chinese expression habits.It is hoped that this report can provide some help for Chinese scholars of Afghanistan studies and provide some ideas for the translation of academic texts.
